History of Kirkland

Kirkland is named for Peter Kirk, an English steel businessman who planned an industrial city here in the late 1880s. The steel mill never opened, and the town grew slowly as a ferry landing and shipbuilding community before incorporating in 1905 and developing into a residential and business suburb.
